Community Partner Spotlight:
David J. Drakulich Art Foundation Has a New Home!
David J. Drakulich Foundation For Freedom of Expression, (DJD Foundation) recently moved into 515 Court Street, establishing the Reid House Gallery and Studio, and Gift Shop where art programming, gallery shows and paper making take place. DJD Foundation is a local, art nonprofit organization, growing on it’s 7th year.
DJD Foundation’s mission is to offer art and recreation programming to veterans and the military connected community as a means of giving gratitude, honor, and a return of the gift of freedom of expression. DJD Foundation encourages all Americans to do their part and exercise their hard won right to freedom of expression, and actively seeks opportunities to increase the citizenry’s knowledge of freedom’s true costs.
Reid House Gallery and Studio, and Gift Shop is open to the public three days a week, Tuesdays and Thursdays from 10-3PM and Sundays from 12-5PM. The gallery offers exquisite and unique art for sale. Sunday gallery hours include hand paper making demos too! You are invited to view and purchase art, crafts and handmade paper, and check out the paper making process. If you are interested in learning the art of paper making, drop in on Sunday afternoon.
Some of DJD Foundation’s programs include Combat Paper Nevada, Veterans Art Project (VAP) and Northern Nevada Veterans Writing Project (NNVWP.) Participants in Combat Paper Nevada make paper from military uniforms. Art and literature is then produced from that paper, which serves as a record of historical events, inspiration, and healing. If you are interested in making paper, or participating in Combat Paper Nevada Project, contact email@example.com.
The Veterans Art Project is an open studio class held at VA Sierra Nevada Health Care Systems, held twice a week and free for anyone registered with the VA. If you or someone you know qualifies for this class, please contact VA Sierra Nevada Health Care Systems recreation department, 775-785-1723.
Northern Nevada Veterans Writing Project is made possible through a collaboration between DJD Foundation and Reno Vet Center to provide opportunities to compose, edit, refine and publish works. This project is open to veterans and the military connected community. NNVWP publishes collective works annually, these publications are available for purchase at the Reid House Gift Shop. If interested in NNVWP, please contact firstname.lastname@example.org.
