SUMMARY:Mar 24 • Spring Break Writing Camp by Jacci Turner
DESCRIPTION:Spring Break Writing Camp by Jacci Turner\nTuesday-Thursday – March 24\, 25\, 26\, 2026\n10:00am to 1:00pm\nSierra Arts Academy Training Studio – 1995 Dickerson Rd\, Reno\nRegistration Fee: $100\nRegistration Link:  Spring Break Writing Camp\n\nSpring Break Writing Camp is a fun\, interactive workshop designed for young teens. The camp meets for three days during spring break\, for three hours each day\, and offers an engaging introduction to multiple creative writing forms\, including poetry\, flash fiction\, haiku\, and fan fiction. \nDaily sessions begin with reading and discussing examples of the genre we are exploring. These mentor texts serve as inspiration and a springboard for students’ own writing. Participants will then write\, share their work\, and practice offering thoughtful feedback that highlights both strengths and opportunities for growth. \nThe camp emphasizes collaboration\, creativity\, and confidence-building. Together\, we create a safe\, supportive\, and judgment-free workshop environment where students are encouraged to express themselves\, take creative risks\, and grow as writers. \nEach day includes a half-hour lunch break. Students will bring a sack lunch\, and drinks and snacks will be provided. \nJacci Turner is the author of award-winning fiction for young adults\, middle grade readers\, and adults. Her debut YA fantasy\, Tree Singer\, weaves together her love of trees\, epic quests\, and a young girl discovering her voice. A Wishing Shelf Book Award finalist with a starred-quality Kirkus review\, it is also available on Audible\, narrated by the incomparable Barbara Bond. \nJacci’s middle grade novel Bending Willow\, the first book in The Finding Home series\, follows two sisters searching for a father who doesn’t know they exist. The book represented Nevada at the National Book Festival in Washington\, D.C.\, was a Wishing Shelf finalist\, and—like all of Jacci’s books—has appeared on Amazon best-seller lists. \nHer YA novels Snapped\, a timely story about cyberbullying and standing up for oneself\, and Cracker\, an alternative-history novel exploring marginalization\, were both finalists for the Wishing Shelf Book Awards.

SUMMARY:Apr 13 • Killing Him Softly with My Short Story by Linda Kay Hardie
DESCRIPTION:Killing Him Softly with My Short Story by Linda Kay Hardie\nSunday Mornings – April 13\, 20\, 27\, 2026\n10:00am to 12:00pm\nSierra Arts Academy Training Studio – 1995 Dickerson Rd\, Reno\nRegistration Fee: $75\nSAF Membership Registration Discount: $65\nRegistration Link:  Killing Him Softly with My Short Story\n\nEveryone loves to write novels—or at least\, to have written one (it’s hard work!). As readers and writers\, we enjoy exploring characters\, motivations\, stakes\, tension\, and conflict. A novel allows space to deeply examine the human condition\, but in today’s busy world\, short stories are often a better fit for both reading and writing. \nHow do you pare down a 50\,000-word saga into a complete\, satisfying narrative of 3\,000 words or less? Writing short stories is an art: it takes skill to unfold a full story in 20 or so pages. The good news is that it’s also a craft that can be learned. \nLinda Kay Hardie taught herself to write concisely and powerfully without sacrificing depth or satisfaction. Now she wants to share those techniques with you. The author of dozens of published short stories\, nonfiction essays\, and poems\, Linda Kay offers insight into what short stories are designed to do—and how to achieve that purpose. \nHer workshop\, Killing Him Softly With My Short Story\, includes hands-on writing exercises\, prompts\, and practical tips to help you focus big ideas into short forms. Come prepared with writing materials (tablet\, notebook\, pen—whatever you prefer) and your ideas. \n\nLinda Kay Hardie writes crime\, horror\, and fantasy stories that have been published in many anthologies. She writes in many genres\, but not romance. She tried once\, and everyone ended up dead. Tragic. When not writing adult short stories\, she writes stories and books for children\, ages 2 to 12. \nLinda’s first writing award was in fifth grade\, when she won a first place trophy for an essay on fire safety. In 2022\, she was honored with the Sierra Arts Foundation Literary Arts Award for fiction. \nLinda is a member of Short Mystery Fiction Writers\, Horror Writers Association\, Society of Children’s Book Writers & Illustrators\, and Cat Writers’ Association. She has a master’s in English from the University of Nevada\, Reno\, where she makes a living as a freelance writer and as staff working for Abyssinian cats.
