My work is about capturing scenes in Nature that are unique and unseen. For this collection, I chose to go off-road and find out of the way locations. These included 7-Mile Canyon, Virginia City, the Virginia Range above the Geiger Grade, Thomas Creek Trail in the Mt. Rose Wilderness, and Peavine Mountain.
I drive Jeeps that are very capable off-road vehicles, and I drive them responsibly (read this as slowly.). I am not interested in overly disturbing wildlife or damaging my vehicles.
I like to go where people aren’t. By off the beaten track, I mean locations where if I see more than a half dozen people over several hours, it’s too crowded.
I shoot both film and digital. I really like black and white as my inspiration for my photography derives from the work of Ansel Adams, and later Ed Weston.
I hope you enjoy my efforts and are inspired to get off the beaten track yourself. Just keep in mind, you probably won’t see me as there are a tremendous number of places in Nevada to photograph that are remote. This is where I will be.
Dana Garrett was given his first camera at the age of seven after watching his dad develop his photographs in their makeshift darkroom. He then went on to perfect the art of taking fuzzy pictures of his feet.
Fast forward to 1999, 33 years later, he decided to invest more time and energy into the art. Since then, he has had numerous solo art shows in Monterey, CA, received three Honorable Mentions in his first entry in the Monterey County Fair Photography Contest, was a Finalist in 5 consecutive entries in the Black and White Spider Awards, an international photography competition, and has successfully juried into the international art exhibitions Art San Diego, ArtEXPO New York, and Art Santa Fe.
Dana is a retired U.S. Navy Chief Petty Officer who was a Meteorologist/Oceanographer for 30+ years and served on three amphibious Assault ships supporting Marine Corps Expeditionary Units. He currently resides in the Virginia City Highlands outside Reno, NV with his wife of 42 years Kathy, and their two dogs.
