Sam Meehan Artist Reception • March 15th

Not Otherwise Specified is a series of abstract portraits exploring mental health. While the stigma has lessened, it is often misunderstood and difficult to explain. I think that most people have either struggled with it themselves at some point or know someone who has. This series of portraits incorporates bright colors and beautiful elements while expressing what may be considered heavy subjects. I hope it will show that it is possible to add beauty to the world even in dark times. Mental illness is often invisible or hard to look at. I hope these pieces allow anyone struggling to feel seen and for those who are not, to look at the topic in a new light.

Sam Meehan – I describe my art as whimsical and more abstract than realistic. I am self taught and my work is intuitive in that I allow it to evolve as I create it. I continue learning as I go. I moved to Reno years ago but have only begun to share my art fairly recently. The majority of my work is mixed media including watercolor, acrylics and collage. I find that art is sometimes an easier way to express myself when words are difficult to find.
