I began producing bronze sculpture while working in an art foundry where workers were allowed to cast their own art on site. Brazing was necessary, so I learned to weld (oxy-acetylene, arc, wire feed, Tig). This offshoot led to employment in various West Coast shipyards. I became an X-Ray Certified, Journeyman Welder in the Boilermaker's Union, Locals 6 and 10. It was the perfect job. When a ship left dry dock, workers were laid off until another vessel arrived. During the interim, worked in my studio and exhibited. Had several, well-received shows of bronze and mixed-media sculpture. Marriage interfered with this creative process. When the spousal bond ended, spent five years in a log cabin by Badger Creek on the Blackfeet Reservation of Montana. My wilderness cabin had no electricity or running water, but the night sky astonished! Wild animals abounded-Grizzly and Black Bears in the yard, Bald Eagles and Ospreys fished the creek. This was a ‘fullblood’ area of the reservation. I learned to speak some of the Blackfeet language during rhis revelatory sojourn. Only salaried work available was 'subbing' at Heart Butte High School. Found that I enjoyed teaching, went back to college (already had a Master's in art) to earn required 'Education' credits. Became credentialed. Taught high school and junior college art, English, creative writing, drama and shop classes. In time, missing hot water, tired of 50 below zero winters, moved to Hawthorne Nevada. Taught art until retirement. I now work in a backyard studio-former livery stable of the late 1800's. Had a small welding area built inside (really small-a welding 'closet'). Studio ceilings are distressingly low-can't work as large as I'd like-but art gets done as you see it here! These sculptural forms spring from possibilities inherent in locally available materials that are purchased or found. An image will come to mind, necessitating its realization in Time.
